Esta tese tem como objetivo apresentar uma análise crítica da tradução para o alemão de Quarto de Despejo, de Carolina Maria de Jesus, sob a perspectiva dos elementos paratextuais que compõem o livro traduzido em 1962 por Johannes Gerold e reeditado nove vezes no período entre 1962 e 1989. Quarto de Despejo foi publicado no Brasil em 1960 e ocupou rapidamente o primeiro lugar na lista dos best-sellers no país. O livro, escrito em primeira pessoa, marca o cenário do gênero autobiográfico com uma voz fora do cânone narrando condições de moradia e sobrevivência em favela ainda novas no imaginário paulistano. A tradução segue o enquadramento dado ao livro pela recepção brasileira, mas encontra solo fértil em um momento político-ideológico das ex-Alemanhas Ocidental e Oriental na década de 1960 que revela interesse pela alteridade e suas condições sociais específicas. A análise dos elementos paratextuais que compõem o livro como capa, orelha, quarta capa, prefácio e posfácio revelou a importância dada aos aspectos político-sociais do livro e o objetivo de orientar a compreensão e a leitura dessa tradução. Isso pode ser vislumbrado nas respostas de leitores-teste da obra e dos paratextos que, na sua maioria, sofreram influências desses textos. Além da característica de orientação, esses paratextos apontaram para características do Übersetzungsauftrag [encargos de tradução]. Para tanto, a Linguística de Corpus foi utilizada como abordagem teórico-metodológica para a ampliação das análises textuais, além disso, os Estudos Descritivos da Tradução e a teoria de paratextos de Genette (2009) foram tomados como principais aportes teóricos.

This thesis aims to present a critical analysis of the German translation of Quarto de Despejo (engl. titel Child of the Dark), by Brazilian writer Carolina Maria de Jesus. The focus centering on the translation from the perspective of the paratextual elements inside the book, translated in 1962 by Johannes Gerold and reedited nine times between 1962 and 1989. Quarto de Despejo was published in Brazil in 1960 and quickly occupied first place on the list of best-sellers in the country. The book, written in the first person, marks the inception of the autobiographical genre, with a voice outside the canon narrating a condition of housing and survival in a favela that at the time was still new in the São Paulo imagination. The German translation of Quarto de Despejo accepts Brazil's estimations of the work, but also finds fertile soil in a political-ideological moment in the former West and East Germany of the 1960s that revealed an That reveals an opening to other cultures and literature. The analysis of the paratextual elements that constitute the book, such as cover, flap text, back cover, preface, and afterword, revealed an importance given to the political-social aspects of Quarto de Despejo and aimed to guide the understanding and reading of this translation. This can be seen in the responses of test-readers of both the book and the paratexts revealing to what extent they were influenced by these translations. Additionally, these paratexts present features of the Übersetzungsauftrag [order/translation project]. We employed Corpus Linguistics as a methodology to expand textual analysis basing our research primarily on Descriptive Translation Studies and the paratext theory of Genette (2009).
