Abstract in English
This dissertation aims to present the translation praxis developed by Tapa theatre group in São Paulo while making the translation of one-act plays by the North American author Tennessee Williams published by É Realizações in 2011 and 2012. The work focuses on two plays "Why Do You Smoke So Much, Lily?" and "Something Unspoken". Although there are a lot plays translated to Brazilian Portuguese, there is a lack of research into the development of their translation process. Consequently, it would be important to produce a viable praxis on the translation decisions made by describing the way a group carries out its translation work. Therefore, I organized the description of Tapa praxis, which aims to make the text easy to be spoken by the actors on the stage (caber na boca dos atores). This description, combined with the translation drafts of the plays, together with the interviews made with the actorstranslators involved in the translation process, the directors, and the consultant of the plays (Eduardo Tolentino, Brian Penido Ross and Maria Silvia Betti), takes us through the process of the translation of the plays. The study shows the way the group managed to keep the poetic and aesthetic language presented by the author in the source text. In addition, the study analyzes theatre translating difficulties and map a process that can serve as reference for future theatre translators.
