Em 1947, o House Un-American Activities Committee [Comitê de Atividades Contra-Americanas da Câmara] (HUAC), uma comissão parlamentar de inquérito, intimou dezenas de profissionais da indústria cinematográfica de Hollywood para prestarem depoimento sobre supostas inserções de propaganda comunista em filmes produzidos pelos estúdios hollywoodianos. Dez dos intimados, conhecidos a partir de então como os Hollywood Ten [os Dez de Hollywood], recusaram-se a cooperar com o comitê e por isso foram demitidos dos estúdios em que trabalhavam e presos por desacato ao Congresso. O objetivo deste trabalho foi produzir uma tradução dos depoimentos ao comitê, com o intuito de contribuir para o conhecimento desse episódio e do contexto histórico em que está inserido. Sua relevância reside no fato de tratar-se de um documento oficial e fonte primária, mais adequada para estudos historiográficos e jornalísticos, que raramente são traduzidos. Para isso, utilizamos o modelo de análise textual para tradução proposto por Christiane Nord (2005), identificando as características discursivas, textuais e linguísticas do corpus que fundamentaram as escolhas das estratégias de tradução, considerando o skopos proposto. Essa é uma tradução crítica, acompanhada por um prefácio, em que a posição da tradutora sobre os fatos é apresentada de forma explícita. Descrevemos os procedimentos tradutórios adotados também com o intuito de contribuir para a prática de outros tradutores e para a reflexão sobre o papel do tradutor (VENUTI, 2008).

In 1947, the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) subpoenaed scores of professionals from the Hollywood motion-picture industry, to testify about alleged communist propaganda inserted in films produced by Hollywood studios. Ten of them became known as the Hollywood Ten. They refused to cooperate with the committee and therefore were dismissed from the studios they worked for and arrested for contempt of Congress. The aim of this thesis is to produce a translation of their depositions into Brazilian Portuguese, in order to contribute to the knowledge of this episode and its historical context. To this end, the translation was based on Christiane Nords (2005) a model for translation-oriented text analysis, which enabled the identification of discursive, textual and linguistic aspects of the corpus that supported the translation strategies, considering its skopos. This is a critical translation, accompanied by a preface in which the translators stance on the facts is presented explicitly. Its relevance lies in the fact that it is an official document and primary source, the most adequate for historiographic and journalistic studies, which are rarely translated. This thesis also describes the translation process with the intention of contributing to the practice of other translators and to the study of the translators role (VENUTI, 2008).
