Este trabalho apresenta uma análise da transposição da peça Um Bonde Chamado Desejo, de Tennessee Williams, para o filme homônimo dirigido por Elia Kazan em 1951. A pesquisa se baseou na teoria de adaptação apresentada por Linda Hutcheon em seu livro Theory of Adaptation (2006) e também nos conceitos de reescrita e patronagem apresentados por André Lefevere (1945-1996) em sua obra Translation, Rewriting and the Manipulation of Literary Fame (1992) além das diferenças entre cinema e teatro, apresentadas nos livros Film and Theater (1936), de Allardyce Nicoll (1894-1976), e Theater and Cinema (1971), de André Bazin (1918-1958). A comparação não visou encontrar fidelidade com o texto fonte, mas sim identificar equivalentes semióticos cinematográficos usados para transformar em imagens o conteúdo e a expressão do texto escrito, tratando texto e filme como produtos independentes. No fim, os ajustes, as distorções, acréscimos, exclusões resultantes do fenômeno tradutório são apresentados.

This work presents an analysis of the transposition of the play A Streetcar Named Desire, by Tennessee Williams, into the homonymous film directed by Elia Kazan in 1951. The research is based on the theory of adaptation presented by Linda Hutcheon in her book Theory of Adaptation (2006), and also on the concepts of rewriting and patronage presented by André Lefevere (1945-1996) in his work Translation, Rewriting and the Manipulation of Literary Fame (1992), besides the differences between film and theater presented in the books Film and Theater (1936), by Allardyce Nicoll (1894-1976), and Theater and Cinema (1971), by André Bazin (1918-1958). The comparison did not intend to find fidelity with the source text, but to identify semiotic cinematographic equivalents used to turn the content and expression of the text into images, treating text and film as independent products. Finally, the adjustments, distortions, additions, exclusions resulting from the transposition are presented.
