Abstract in English
In the present study, we aim to comprehend the concept of anima according to the Liber de anima seu sextus de naturalibus, the Latin version of the Kitāb al-Nafs, "Book of the Soul", by the Persian philosopher Ibn Sīnā, Latinized as Avicenna, whose translation into Latin took place in the 12th century, in the city of Toledo (Spain), under the patronage of the Cluniac monks. This work substantially contains Aristotelian psychology, combined with Platonic elements and medical science from that time. It served as an argumentative source for Latin-speaking intellectuals to build a psychology that would express in philosophical terms the world view conceptions prevalent in medieval civilization, which had Christian foundations and Augustine of Hippo and Gregory of Nyssa as artful thinkers. To carry out this investigation, excerpts of the text were translated, from which Avicenna's doctrina de anima could be abstracted, more specifically chapters I, II and III, of the First Book, and in chapters III and VII, of the Fifth Book, placing them in synopsis with the Latin text. Intercalating the excerpts and paragraphs, we made interpretive comments in order to guide the reader in understanding the content of the excerpts. Before that, however, we made a brief exposition of the historical and cultural aspects that served as a background for the composition and translation of the work.
