Abstract in English
Since our main objective was to understand the meaning of death and dying as they appear in Shiokari Pass by Miura Ayako, in this research we used the phenomenological method to unveil the meaning of this phenomenon. Through this, we were able to describe death in two main categories: facing the death of other people and facing the death of ourselves. The death of other people, whether possible or real, opens the way to the experience of anguish and, with it, the perception of death as a possibility of ourselves. And, in this anguish that motivates the Christian characters in the novel to imitate Christ, not only death guides the meaning of their lives, but also the hope of their own resurrections. This demonstrates Miura as a writer concerned not only with describing situations of despair in the face of our finitude and sin, but also worried about offering a remedy that transcends selfishness and makes hope to grow in those who are dying and in all those around them. We then considered the possibility of further investigations of hope in the Japanese literature of her time and also its comparison with other Japanese Christian writers who were also concerned with similar issues
