A naturalização do bom desempenho educacional de estudantes nipo-brasileiros integra o imaginário nacional. Haja vista a associação direta, propomos identificar como o estereótipo positivo foi construído, consolidado e perpetuado. A hipótese é de que a expectativa gerada pelo estereótipo foi criada junto à narrativa de minoria modelo, em um contexto de suposta democracia racial no Brasil, e reforçada tanto por descendentes como não descendentes. A consolidação do estereótipo será averiguada pela exposição da representação que se faz do estudante nipo-brasileiro em obras celebrativas da imigração japonesa e nos jornais impressos, do período posterior à Segunda Guerra Mundial até o início do século XXI (década de 1970 a 2010). Entendemos que o estereótipo positivo influencia negativamente a construção identitária de parcela dos estudantes nipo-brasileiros que podem não atender à expectativa criada. O contraditório efeito do estereótipo sobre o perfil específico de estudante reflete a condição paradoxal de nipo-brasileiros no contexto das relações étnico-raciais do país: são indivíduos, ao mesmo tempo, temidos (perigo amarelo) e admirados (minoria modelo). Entender a construção, a consolidação e a perpetuação do estereótipo nas contínuas gerações de estudantes nipo-brasileiros nos faz questionar a interpretação, empreendida pelo senso comum, de grupo étnico-racial homogêneo e exemplar. Ademais, a reflexão do estereótipo de nipo-brasileiros colabora para o debate sobre a formação da identidade nacional e, derradeiramente, para necessária crítica à suposta democracia racial presente no país.

High educational performance achieved by Japanese-Brazilian students is deemed as "natural" within Brazilian overall mindset. In view of such direct association, this paper is aimed at identifying how that positive stereotype has been constructed, consolidated, and perpetuated. Our hypothesis is that expectations triggered by the same stereotype have been established with the model-minority narrative, in a context of an alleged Brazilian racial democracy, which in turn is reinforced both by Japanese descendants and non-descendants. The consolidation of such stereotypes will be validated by the exposure of representations of Japanese-Brazilian students, both in works celebrating Japanese immigration and in printed newspapers, from post-World War II until the early 21st century (1970s - 2010). For us, the positive stereotype plays a negative role on part of those Japanese-Brazilians who cannot meet such stereotyped expectations. The conflicting effects stemming from stereotypes on the specific student profile equally reflect Japanese-Brazilian's dubious condition in ethnical-racial relations in the country: those individuals are simultaneously feared ("yellow peril") and admired ("model minority"). Understanding the construction, the consolidation, and the perpetuation of this stereotype in ongoing generations of Japanese-Brazilian students leads us to question the interpretation, undertaken by common sense, according to which there is a homogeneous and exemplary ethnical-racial group. Furthermore, pondering on Japanese-Brazilian stereotypes contributes for discussing national cultural identity and, ultimately, criticizing an alleged Brazilian racial democracy.
