A narrativa policial, em primeiro lugar, depende de um jogo travado entre autor e leitor, com base em um conjunto de regras que instruem os contornos do texto. O interesse acadêmico pelo gênero policial japonês, contudo, principalmente em solo brasileiro, tem sido pequeno. Apesar do número de obras traduzidas estarem gradualmente aumentando, não houve ainda uma tentativa de explorar as complexidades e as implicações desse jogo no ato tradutório. Assim, com este trabalho, objetiva-se desbravar os desafios encontrados na tradução de material inferencial da ficção policial japonesa de Edogawa Rampo (1894-1965), autor japonês responsável pela criação dos primeiros materiais do gênero em solo nipônico, considerando seu modo de leitura peculiar e o caráter ambíguo inerente à língua japonesa. Para isso, traçou-se uma aprofundada análise da ficção policial enquanto gênero autônomo e o surgimento da obra de Rampo, assim como a criação de seu mestre detetive (meitantei) Akechi Kogorō. Para investigar as áreas de conformismo ou subversão em sua obra, então, focou-se na observação de como um leitor experiente com o gênero policial o lê, traçando um percurso através do texto com base em um repertório de convenções que o permitirá participar do aspecto lúdico da narrativa, batendo o material de suas obras iniciais contra as conceituações de John Cawelti e George Dove, quanto à fórmula narrativa. Por fim, conectouse essa discussão sobre o modo de leitura peculiar do gênero com uma preocupação com a busca por semelhança interpretativa na tradução, conforme promovido por Ernst-August Gutt em sua leitura da Teoria da Relevância. Com isso, percebeu-se que o tradutor de ficção policial deve se portar como um autêntico detetive, jogado em um mar de evidências que poderão, finalmente, elucidar a intenção do autor e as expectativas do leitor, conferindo a ele a responsabilidade de decidir entre ofuscar e esclarecer o enigma no cerne do texto.

Detective fiction, first and foremost, depends upon a game played by author and reader, based on a set of rules that instruct the outlines of the text. However, academic interest towards Japanese detective fiction, especially on Brazilian soil, has been scarce. Although the number of translated works is gradually increasing, there has not yet been an attempt to explore the intricacies and implications of this game on the act of translation. Thus, this dissertation ventures through the challenges found in translating the inferential material found on Edogawa Rampo's (1894-1965) detective fiction work, the author responsible for creating the genre's first Japanese works, considering the genre's peculiar reading mode and the ambiguous character inherent to the Japanese language. To this end, a thorough analysis of detective fiction as an autonomous genre and the emergence of the work of Rampo is delineated, as well as the creation of his great detective (meitantei) Akechi Kogorō. Then, to investigate the areas of conformism or subversion in his work, a focus is given on observing how an experienced reader of the detective genre reads it, tracing a path through the text based on a repertoire of conventions that will allow him to participate in the narrative game, pitting his early works against the concepts stipulated by John Cawelti and George Dove on formula fiction. Finally, this discussion about the peculiar reading mode of the genre is connected to a concern about the search for interpretative resemblance in translation, as championed by Ernst-August Gutt on his reading of Relevance Theory. That way, we come to the conclusion that the detective fiction translator must behave like a true detective, thrown into a sea of evidence that can finally elucidate the author's intent and the reader's expectations, giving him the responsibility to decide between obfuscating and clarifying the riddle at the heart of the text.
