Metamorphoses of perspective, a new look: reflections on the development of the contemporary literary reader

Paul Ricoeur's hermeneutics
Abstract in English
This paper proposes a number of reflections on the development of the literary reader from two standpoints: literature as a system of thought, as world cognition and as an understanding of human experience, and the reading of literature as an experience of reader development and transformation. For this purpose, theoretical propositions will be articulated, as they embrace the principles of literary theory and the leading concepts of contemporary philosophy, in particular hermeneutics as it plays a key role in the process of human knowledge. A classroom pedagogical praxis and the meticulous observation of the learning process of young readers of literature and writers of literature processing texts will be correlated to these theoretical investigations. First, we present the essence of the modern scientific paradigm and the criticism to which it has been exposed since the end of the 19th century. In this context, we draw upon the fundamental concepts of philosophical hermeneutics postulated by Hans-Georg Gadamer and formulated from the perspective of literature by Paul Ricouer, whose reflections embrace the ontological and existential dimension of literature as well as the literary reading experience. Subsequently, we expand two lines proposed by Paul Ricoeur, as they elucidate the interpretation process through which text and reader meet. That is to say, the metaphorical reference as a basis for the operation and cognitive value of the literary language as it generates a relation between text and the interpreter's creative imagination, and the dialectic relationship between explanation and understanding as the interpretative reading dynamics that make up the ricoeurian hermeneutic circle. These lines reconnect in such a way as to develop mediating strategies aiming at the education of literary readers, primarily in the Portuguese Language classroom. Thirdly, we present reading mediating experiences of the novel Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll (1865) undertaken with 9th grade high school students from a private school in the city of São Paulo. Finally, we examined the students' text production, looking for traces of the reading journey initiated in the classroom, as well as its assimilation as an authentic experience with the selected literary work. This discursive occurrence is understood as an appropriation, which, according to the ricoeurian theory, corresponds to the dialogue between the text's and the reader's horizons, whereby both are reflected and transformed. We also observed how the elaboration of mediated reading strategies, intertwined with our investigative perspective, similarly built itself as a hermeneutic exercise, which, by often re-signifying itself, greatly expanded the horizons of this research.
