O presente trabalho tem como objetivo analisar as representações do Estado do Maranhão e Grão-Pará nos sermões de Antônio Vieira pregados no século XVII. A partir de uma revisão bibliográfica, buscamos compreender como o padre jesuíta apresentava o território, o(s) povo(s) e a(s) língua(s) local(is) ao seu público. Para tanto, foram selecionados os sermões da Primeira Oitava de Páscoa (1656), do Espírito Santo (1657) e da Epifania (1662), seguindo uma ordem cronológica e considerando os temas abordados. Partindo do contexto político da época e levando em conta o interesse do Estado e da Igreja diante dessas questões, pretende-se destacar a unidade teológico-retórico-política presente na obra do padre inaciano, a qual não pode ser dissociada dessa revisão. Compreendemos, portanto, que, por meio dessa sincronicidade de papéis, Vieira tornou-se uma das principais figuras das práticas letradas do século XVII, cujas representações poderiam alcançar e influenciar um amplo público.

The present study aims to analyze the representations of the State of Maranhão and Grão-Pará in the sermons preached by Antônio Vieira in the XVIIth century. Through a bibliographical review, we seek to comprehend how the Jesuit priest presented the territory, its people, and the local language(s) to his audience. For this purpose, we have selected the sermons of the Primeira Oitava de Páscoa (1656), Espírito Santo (1657), and Epifania (1662), following a chronological order and considering the themes addressed. Drawing from the political context of the time and taking into account the interests of the State and the Church regarding these matters, we intend to emphasize the theological-rhetorical-political unity found in the works of the Ignatian priest, which cannot be dissociated from this review. Therefore, we comprehend that through this synchronicity of roles, Vieira became one of the main figures in the scholarly practices of the XVII century, whose representations could reach and influence a broad audience.
