Estudo comparativo que tem como foco a análise da representação do masculino e das masculinidades nas obras O barão de Lavos (1922 [1891]), O Livro de Alda (1922 [1898]) e Amanhã (1924 [1901]), do autor português Abel Botelho; e Casa de pensão (1884), O cortiço (2015 [1890]) e Livro de uma sogra (1973 [1895]), do autor brasileiro Aluísio Azevedo. O principal objetivo deste estudo é viabilizar a leitura de um projeto literário que tem como intento último o exame da masculinidade e a prescrição de modos de se constituir como um homem, no século XIX. Para tanto, a tese se divide em três capítulos, os quais analisam, de maneira comparativa - entre as obras e as obras diante de teorias ligadas aos estudos do gênero e da masculinidade -, a utilização da noção de papéis sexuais como norteador para a representação das identidades de gênero nos romances; as prescrições para a elaboração e o exercício da masculinidade, a partir de paradigmas normativos; e, por fim, a análise da representação do corpo, compreendida como materialização da identidade de gênero e, portanto, elemento importante na representação literária do masculino e das masculinidades.

Comparative study that focuses on the analysis of the representation of the masculine and masculinities in the works O barão de Lavos (1922 [1891]), O Livro de Alda (1922 [1898]) and Amanhã (1924 [1901]), by the Portuguese author Abel Botelho; and Casa de pensão (1884), O cortiço (2015 [1890]) and Livro de uma sogra (1973 [1895]), by Brazilian author Aluísio Azevedo. The main objective of this study is to enable the reading of a literary project that has as its ultimate intent the examination of masculinity and the prescription of ways of constituting oneself as a man, in the 19th century. Therefore, the thesis is divided into three chapters, which analyze, in a comparative way - between the works and the works in the face of theories linked to the studies of gender and masculinity -, the use of the notion of sexual roles as a guide for the representation gender identities in novels; prescriptions for the elaboration and exercise of masculinity, based on normative paradigms; and, finally, the analysis of the representation of the body, understood as the materialization of gender identity and, therefore, an important element in the literary representation of the masculine and masculinities.
