Abstract in English
Considering the importance of masculinity studies in the debates of the Brazilian nation, we will analyze the novel Recordações do Escrivão Isaías Caminha, by the writer Lima Barreto, in order to identify how the masculinity data is linked to the republican national project of the late nineteenth century and beginning of the 20th century. Thus, the objective of this work is to demonstrate how national masculinity is constituted from the social representational systems of whiteness and blackness, thus identifying how different subjects assimilate the models of social practices of the male universe. For this, we will make a critical reading of the novel emphasizing the dubious position of the mestizo in the national racial fabric and its conflicting incorporation into the hegemonic masculinity in order to identify how national ideals are emulated and paired with discourses, knowledge and narratives linked to the experience of the European subject. , - ethnically demarcated, rooted in the male universe and which has compulsory heterosexuality as the main source of agency of desire.
