O objetivo desta pesquisa é investigar a representação de Machado de Assis e Cruz e Sousa, escritores negros do século XIX, em materiais didáticos de sistemas privados de ensino, com especial atenção ao processo de branqueamento. Assim, realizou-se uma análise das apostilas de língua portuguesa, observando a maneira que as vidas, as obras e os contextos de produção desses escritores são apresentados, bem como as imagens reproduzidas. Também são considerados quais textos desses autores são utilizados, além de problematizar a maneira como eles são lidos, refletindo sobre as razões dessas preferências e qual é o impacto delas. Em articulação com referenciais teóricos sobre práticas de leitura literária, o resultado da análise é utilizado como ponto de partida para a elaboração e apresentação de propostas de leitura de Machado de Assis e Cruz e Sousa nas escolas.

This research aims to investigate the representation of Machado de Assis and Cruz e Sousa, black writers of the 19th century, in didactic materials of private education systems, with particular attention to the whitening process. Thus, an analysis of the Portuguese language handouts was carried out, observing how these writers' lives, work, and production contexts are presented, as well as the reproduced photographs. It is also considered which texts by these authors are used, in addition to problematizing the way they are read, reflecting on the reasons for these preferences and what their impact is. In conjunction with theoretical references on literary reading practices, the result of the analysis is used as a starting point for preparing and presenting reading proposals for Machado de Assis and Cruz e Sousa in schools.
