O cenário do acolhimento de Amado na URSS no período pré-1956 se mostra razoavelmente favorável ao escritor brasileiro, tanto nas camadas hierárquicas mais altas do aparato, quanto entre membros da intelligentsia que tinham algum papel na recomendação de autores. Assim, Os subterrâneos da liberdade sai em russo já em 1954, mesmo ano em que estreia no Brasil talvez seguindo as diretivas do Comitê Central do PCUS, que se referiam diretamente a Amado quando explicitavam a necessidade de se apressar a publicação de determinada literatura traduzida para o russo. Mas os ecos do discurso de Khruschov não foram necessariamente favoráveis à publicação de Gabriela, Cravo e Canela na Rússia, como mostramos aqui. Conquanto pareça óbvio que o discurso secreto tenha determinado tanto a produção desta obra por Amado, como sua publicação em russo, em um círculo vicioso, a decisão não é tão patente no aparato soviético: pelo contrário, há um estado de hesitação quanto à publicação do baiano pós-discurso secreto. Meu objetivo nesta tese não foi analisar a recepção amadiana na URSS, mas sim as circunstâncias que possibilitaram sua publicação. No presente estudo, o conceito de gatekeeper (do inglês, porteiro, guardião do portão) tem papel fundamental. No cenário da centralização editorial na União Soviética, nem mercado, nem vendas definiam as decisões quanto às publicações, que eram tomadas seguindo a ideologia vigente e suas variações. Assim, mostramos, por meio de documentos provenientes de diversos arquivos e de outras fontes, como os acontecimentos pós-1956 geraram dúvidas quanto à publicação de Amado e como Gabriela, Cravo e Canela foi publicado na URSS.

The situation in the USSR before 1956 was quite favorable for the publication of Jorge Amado's works both on the part of the higher echelons of power, and on the part of literary institutions and the intelligentsia that could choose and recommend foreign writers. Thus, The Bowels of Liberty is published in Russian in 1954, the same year it is released in Brazil maybe following CPSU commands which refer specifically to Amado when presenting the need of rushing the publication of certain translated literature in Russian. But the repercussion of Khrushchev's speech was not necessarily propitious to the publication of Gabriela, clove and cinnamon in Russia, as we analyze here. Albeit it seems obvious that the secret speech had determined both the production of this work by Amado and its publication in Russian, in a vicious circle, the decision is not evident in the Soviet apparatus. On the contrary, there is a hesitation about the publication of Amado after the secret speech. With the editorial centralization in the Soviet Union, neither the market nor sales defined publishing decisions, but the prevailing ideology. The aim of the present study isnt to analyze the reception of Jorge Amado's works, but the conditions that made its publishing possible. Therefore, in the present study the concept of gatekeeper plays an important role. This study analyses through archival documents and other sources the reasons why the post- 1956 events provoked much uncertainty and doubts concerning the publication of Amados works and how Gabriela, clove and cinnamon was published in the USSR.
