O objetivo desta dissertação é a elaboração de um quadro interpretativo que possibilite evidenciar a incorporação de elementos greco-romanos ao repertório iconográfico da Arte de Gandhāra. Através de um estlldo sistemático de vestígios arqueológicos - relevos narrativos e esculturas - e dados historiográficos, procuramos verificar os complexos fenômenos ocorridos na região bactro-gandhariana, a partir da fundação das colônias gregas, com a conquista de Alexandre, o Grande, em 327-325 a.C. até a Dinastia Kusāṇā dos séculos I e Il d.C., período em que essa escola artística alcançou maior expressão. Esta pesquisa refere-se ao fenômeno artístico-religioso ocorrido nessa região, fundamentalmente ligado à evolução do pensamento indiano-budista e do Budismo, principal tema dessa escola. A partir das fontes materiais organizadas em um Banco de Dados e Imagens (BDI), o Corpus Documental do Projeto, constituiu-se o embasamento empírico para a abordagem e desenvolvimento das principais questões que o permeiam: a identificação da assimilação de traços estilísticos, ocorrida a partir da interação dos povos que habitaram essa região. Os resultados obtidos a partir da quantificação dos ciclos narrativos e elementos greco-romanos permitiram evidenciar a incorporação de padrões de representação externos ao universo simbólico indiano-budista e verificar sua relevância iconográfica dentro do contexto histórico do período em que esta escola artística se desenvolveu.

The purpose of this dissertation is to elaborate an interpretative framework capable of indicating the incorporation of Greco-Roman elements in the iconographic repertoire of Gandharan Art. Through the systematic study of archaeological remains - narrative reliefs and sculptures - and historiographic data, we have verified various cultural phemomena which sprouted in the Bactro-Gandharan region, since the foundation of the Greek colonies, after the conquest of Alexander the Great, in 327-325 BC, until the Kusāṇā Dinasty, of the first and second centuries AD, period in which this artistic school reached its highest development The research refers to the artistic and religious practices that occurred in this region, closely related to the evolution of the Indian-Buddhist Thought and to Buddhism, the main theme of such art. The material sources were organized in a Data and Image Base (BDI), the Documental Corpus of the project, constituting the empiric basis to approach and develop the essential issues related to the art: the assimilation of stylistic features brought forth by the interaction of different societies living in the region. The results obtained from the quantification of the Narrative Cycles and Greco-Roman patterns were able to indicate the extent and ways through which the incorporation of foreign patterns of representation took place in the lndian-Buddhist symbolic universe, and to verify its iconographic relevance in the Historic period in which this artistic school developed.
