Abstract in Portuguese
Esta tese apresenta uma leitura crítica de duas obras contemporâneas da literatura inglesa The Sense of an Ending e Levels of Life, do escritor Julian Barnes.

Abstract in English
This doctoral dissertation presents a critical reading of two contemporary works of English literature, The Sense of an Ending and Levels of Life, by Julian Barnes. Taking into account that fictional narratives bring certain dimensions of human experience to language, the study of the representations of time and memory in these two works intends to investigate the resignifying of the narrators' trajectories that occur in the midst of an intense discussion of past and present, which encompass the possibility of recalling memories, of elaborating on the polysemy of affections and the investigation of how to deal with the passage of time when faced with the unavoidable reality of human finiteness. The critical perspective for this work is based on the philosophical hermeneutics of Paul Ricoeur, especially on his monumental work Temps et Récit, and other theorists of a similar point of view.
