Abstract in English
Published by Chico Buarque in 2003, Budapest presents its readers to the enigmatic narrative, whose narrator's identity is one of the mysteries, about José Costa's oscillating trajectory between Rio and Budapest, Portuguese and Hungarian, Vanda and Kriska. Ghostwriter of success, he produces his oeuvre in different genres and languages which makes him either emerge from the narrative substance or drown in its flow: in the end there seems to be only empty mirrors face to face in abyss without identity. At first glance, the novel sounds like a globalized version of an autonomous artifact with no connection to the referential world, whose power lies in the institution of a purely artistic logic, possible only in the artistic field: a labyrinth in which narrators, author, language and world get lost, from which only the work of art may leave unscathed. However, the narrative games are revealed to be based on the social ground of contemporary Brazil, emerging from a military dictatorship which had cut time in half: the mastery of the narrative techniques of the cultural industry and the pretension of an impossible work of art function as a falsification of an irreconcilable reality. In this work we shall approach the objective paranoia , a social form, in the present novel: how the social objectivity of the country, which never carried out the Formation, symptomatically conformed Budapest narrator, structuring the work of art and the world.
