A angústia da forma e o bovarismo: Lima Barreto, romancista

Sentimento de Insuficiência

Abstract in English
This work attempts to understand the peculiarities of the Novel form in Lima Barreto's work, taking into consideration his marginal position in the Brazilian society and literature and his literary project, which shows solidarity to those excluded from society. The quest for the symbolic representation for the content of his literature proves to be arduous and permeated by the author's constant feeling of insufficiency. In its attempt to clarify this anguish over form, this dissertation investigates the relations between the literary project and its realization and compares them to the paradigm of the Bildtmgsroman, the social changes at the tum of the century, the legacy of the Naturalistic Scientificism and the concept of Bovaryism, as formulated by Jules de Gaultier and widely used by Brazilian critics along the 20th century and by Lima Barreto himself. All his novels are focused on in this work.
