Em 1955, a pedido do diretor do TBC, Zbigniew Ziembinski, Manuel Bandeira traduz o drama histórico Maria Stuart (1801), de Friedrich Schiller. O poeta pernambucano, que já traduzira poemas de Goethe, Heine, Hölderlin e Rilke, enfrenta então sua primeira tradução de longo fôlego da língua alemã, e sua primeira tradução para o teatro. Partindo das formulações do pensamento alemão dos séculos XVIII e XIX, além do ensaio "A tarefa do tradutor", de Walter Benjamin, a respeito da tradução como forma, do tradutor como autor e da tradução como exercício integrante do processo de formação do poeta, a análise busca os traços ínsitos da poética e da versificação bandeirianas que se caracterizam como marcas d'água com que o tradutor registra sua presença no texto schilleriano. Recursos recorrentes na poesia de Bandeira, bem como questões levantadas em seus trabalhos críticos, presentes em conferências, crônicas e antologias, são mobilizados de modo a tornar o texto traduzido como indissociável da obra de seu tradutor. Desse modo, a tradução de Maria Stuart pode ser vista como uma obra a quatro mãos, em que Bandeira, a cada escolha feita, manifesta seu próprio entendimento da peça e estabelece um diálogo com o poeta de Marbach.

In 1955, at the request of the theater director Zbigniew Ziembinski, Manuel Bandeira translates the historical drama Maria Stuart (1801), by Friedrich Schiller. The poet who had already translated poems by Goethe, Heine, Hölderlin and Rilke, then faces his first long-term translation of the German language, and his first translation of a stage play. Starting from the formulations of 18th and 19th centuries German philosophy, as well as those from the essay "The translator's task", by Walter Benjamin, about translation as a form, the translator as author and translation as an integral exercise in the poet's formation process, the analysis seeks the embedded traits of Bandeiras poetics and versification that are characterized as watermarks with which the translator registers his presence in the Schillerian text. Recurring proceeds in Bandeira's poetry, as well as questions raised in his critical works, present in conferences, chronicles and anthologies, are mobilized in order to make the translated text as inseparable from the work of its translator. Therefore, Maria Stuart's translation can be seen as a four-handed work, in which Bandeira manifests through his choices his own understanding of the play and establishes a dialogue with the poet from Marbach.
