Abstract in English
La fortuna de Manuel de Faria, written in the fourth decade of the 17th Century and rediscovered in the 20th Century, consists of an autographed account of the Portuguese polygraph Manuel de Faria e Sousa (1590-1649). Composition of a memory, through it the writer-narrator recounts his services as a secretary of masters. The center of the matter ends in the period between 1622 and 1634, when the scholar is part of the body of servants gathered around Manuel de Moura Corte Real, ambassador to King Philip IV in Rome. In the work, the employee exposes his miserable luck, that is, the misfortunes and the mishaps that marked his public life at court, especially the palace intrigues passed on in the Roman legation, where the conflicts against the Spanish aristocrat intensified, to such an extent, point of taking him to an abrupt break with the manor house. La fortuna has been studied as an example of the genre autobiography, sometimes baroque autobiography. This classification is supposed to consist of anachronism, by applying notions of the expression of subjectivities to an object conceived before the modern. Instead, we propose to resume its gift of production and reception, investigating the rhetorical ends of the work inscribed in the category of private lives. Through the elaboration of a defense text containing vehement attacks against the noble Castelo Rodrigo, the seventeenth-century writer directed his role to a very specific group of auditors, aiming at the credit refund. The objective of the present thesis is to present subsidies for this other possible interpretation of La fortuna, confronting appropriate technical procedures for the analysis of the writing, such as notions about the forensic genre, reason of State, audience, circulation of manuscripts, doctrines of the ingenious concept, courteous discretion (discretio), honest dissimulation, among other codes in vogue in Europe in the Counter Reform 16th and 17th' Centuries. In the discovery of these elements, it sheds light on several gaps in the biography of the author in focus, a paradigm of the Lusitanian'man of letters active in Spain during the Composite Monarchy (1580-1640).
