Fernando Pessoa é autor de imensa importância literária. No entanto, seus textos teóricos carecem de investigação. Aqui propomos uma interpretação para o Sebastianismo e o Quinto Império, o discurso teórico mais proeminente de Fernando Pessoa. Essa recolha de textos contém componentes históricos, políticos, literários e cabalísticos, usados por Pessoa para recuperar a alma portuguesa. Para atingir esse objetivo, o poeta fundamentou a recuperação da alma através do uso do mito de D. Sebastião, a manifestação original da tradição portuguesa. Entendemos que Fernando Pessoa retoma o mito em períodos de crise social e existencial, os quais mapeou durante sua análise histórica de Portugal na coletânea intitulada Sebastianismo. Cada período de crise foi identificado pela predominância de estrangeirismos, sejam eles franceses, ingleses ou espanhóis. Fernando Pessoa utilizou o mito para trazer figuras ocultas que simbolizam a identidade perdida, ou seja, a alma portuguesa e os seus desejos de grandeza, os únicos capazes de orientar o povo em momentos de conflito rumo a um destino glorioso. Além disso, o poeta procurou levar o amor ao destino de sua pátria por meio de uma nova figura que se apresenta na tradição mítica e se mostra como a imagem espelhada do verdadeiro Portugal.

Fernando Pessoa is an author of immense literary importance. However, his theoretical texts lack investigation. Here we propose an interpretation for Sebastianism and Fifth Empire, the most prominent theoretical discourse of Fernando Pessoa. That collection of texts contains historical, political, literary and cabalistic components, which were used by Person to recover the Portuguese soul. To achieve that goal, the poet grounded the soul's recovery through the use of the myth of D. Sebastião, the original manifestation of the Portuguese tradition. We understand that Fernando Pessoa takes up the myth in periods of social and existential crisis, which he mapped during his historical analysis of Portugal in the collection entitled Sebastianism. Each period of crisis was identified by the predominance of foreigners, whether french, english or spanish. Fernando Pessoa used the myth to bring hidden figures that symbolize the lost identity, that is, the Portuguese soul and its desires for greatness, the only ones capable of guiding the people in moments of conflict towards a glorious destiny. Moreover, the poet seeks to bring love to the destiny of his homeland by means of a new figure which presents itself in the mythical tradition and shows itself as the mirror image of the true Portugal.
