Abstract in English
The present work is a first attempt to a critical approach entirely devoted to the novel Sinais de Fogo (Signs of Fire), by Jorge de Sena, which was written in the 60's and posthumously published in 1979. The main objective of this study is to show the relations and interpenetration between individual and collective experience, between individual and historical memory, between the history of the character in the novel and the History of Portugal when the former takes place. After locating Signs of Fire as fiction in Jorge de Sena's work context, stressing the recollecting process upon which part of the novel is developed, and also after presenting the genesis of the novel, the study discusses the relations between autobiography and fiction which become evident mainly because the novel borrows elements from the autobiographical narrative as well as from the so called « formation-novel » (Bildungsroman) in order to build a text that mingles individual and collective history. Furthermore, it emphasizes that this fictitious autobiography, even keeping ties with the psychological novel of the first half of the 20th century, reveals itself as a Bildungsroman parody, just because it sets the character in a hedge situation, at a crisis moment: personal and historical crisis. The study ends up dealing with the progressive understanding of the interpenetration of experiences which were acquired by the character, and which turn him into a poet
