A proposta deste trabalho é a de investigar a hipótese de uma oscilação trágico-ideológica em cinco romances de José Saramago - Levantado do chão, Memorial do convento, O ano da morte de Ricardo Reis, História do cerco de Lisboa e O evangelho segundo Jesus Cristo - através da análise das categorias literárias de tempo e voz narrativa. Valendo-se das técnicas de tratamento do tempo, o narrador organiza a matéria diegética, fixa-lhe a duração, ordena-a na seqüência do enunciado e singulariza-a ao longo do texto, atribuindo, desta forma, ordem e sentido aos acontecimentos. Como unificador do enredo, o narrador se faz ideólogo. Por outro lado, os comentários e as intervenções da voz narrante, marcam um descentramento do poder discursivo, reenviando-nos para o território da desordem, onde reinam o caos e a pluralidade. Da confluência de ambas as posturas, surge um texto entrecortado pelas questões da contemporaneidade, no qual coexistem elementos modernos e pós-modernos. Em suma, tempo, voz e texto estão estruturados na ficção de José Saramago como uma resposta da atual literatura portuguesa às perplexidades suscitadas pela cultura da pós-modernidade

The present work investigates the hypothesis of a tragic and ideological oscillation in five of José Saramagos novels - Levantado do chão, Memorial do convento, O ano da morte de Ricardo Reis, História do cerco de Lisboa e O evangelho segundo Jesus Cristo - through the analysis of the literary categories of time and narrative voice. By using techniques for the treatment of time, the narrator organizes the diegetic subject-matter, sets its duration, arranges it according to the sequence of the enunciation and distinguishes it throughout the text, giving order and sense to the events. By unifying the plot, the narrator becomes an ideologist. On the other hand, the comments and interventions of the narrative voice determine a decentralization of discourse power, taking us back to the territory of chaos and plurality. A text interspersed with contemporary matters and marked by the blending of modernist and postmodernist elements emerges from the crossing-point of both postures. In a word, time, voice and text are built in José Saramagos fiction as an answer from presente-day Portuguese Literature to the perplexities arisen by postmodernist culture
