Abstract in English
In A Girl is Lost in her Century in Search of her Father (2014), the Portuguese writer Gonçalo M. Tavares places the girl Hanna in an opaque post-war European setting. She is looking for her father and throughout the narrative finds Marius, the man who decides to help her. Together they set out on an erratic adventure that proves itself to be at the same time innocuous and revealing. The present work proposes ways of reading this narrative and begins with Tavares's cosmography, aiming to demonstrate his literary profusion, his various textual universes, and his writing method. Moving forward, we suggest that the novel analyzed here occupies an intermediate space between Tavares's series The Kingdom and The neighborhood in order to establish a city. And, coming to the body, we discuss the construction of the various characters that make up the puzzle that is the work analyzed here and how their éthos relate to the protagonists, revealing different layers of a humanity that, despite being wounded, still resists and emanates life. At the end of the reading path, we point to a new proposal of civility based on this novel by Gonçalo M. Tavares. Throughout the dissertation, we rely on theories about the essay and the fragment (with Barrento and Blanchot), the memory (from Benjamin, Buescu and Gagnebin) and the urban issue (with the theories of Bresciani and Lefebvre), as well as general notions borrowed from the field of Ethics, such as otherness, subject constitution, collectivity, affection, and biopolitics (from Agamben, Arendt, Deleuze and Guattari, Derrida, Foucault and Sloterdijk) and, in addition, the work of Gonçalo M. Tavares also as a theoretical support.
