Keywords in Portuguese
Ensino de literatura brasileira
Literatura brasileira e violência
Literatura e livros didáticos

Brazilian literature teaching and violence: an analysis of approaches of the poem "O navio negreiro", by Castro Alves, in 2018 PNLD textbooks

Abstract in English
This research contemplates and ponders over studying approaches in teaching textbooks, mainly when those textbooks present Brazilian literature texts with a violent background. In this context and observing three didactic collections approved by the 2018 Brazilian National Textbook Program (PNLD), this paper analyzes how the poem "O navio negreiro", by Castro Alves, appears in each of these collections. For that, this paper has considered the conceptions of literature that support the approach in which the literary text is indicated in those textbooks. Thus, this study noticed that the textbooks devoted little attention to slavery and to the violence expressed in the poem by the brutal context in which the individuals are portrayed in the vessel. Through the analyses, one is able to notice a pattern in the collections; this pattern is reinforced by the public notice's demands, in which the literature section is usually structured in divisions of literary movements. Therefore, this paper presents discussions on some of the consequences of a teaching method that do not emphasize the polysemous nature of literary texts and that do not address violence themes in order to ensure pattern continuity, impairing the dissemination of a teaching methodology of literature grounded in human rights.
