Nuclear among 16th century scholars, excerpere can be defined as the practice of collecting excerpta, that is, proofs, examples, words, and figures for inuentio and elocutio of various rhetorical and poetic genres to which, in order to make them easily accessible, one or more alphabetical indexes were attached. Thus, it became common practice in the Typographical Old Regime to use "copious indexes", which, at the end of books of different genres, gathered in alphabetical commonplaces excerpts of the work they accompanied. In Luso-Brazilian letters, a privileged example of this practice are the "indexes of the most remarkable things" added to the fifteen volumes of the Sermões (1679-1748), by Antônio Vieira. In order to reconstruct archaeologically credible ways of composing and using them, these indexes are studied here, on the one hand, in the light of the understanding of excerpere in the context of the Jesuit school culture and, on the other hand, in its relation with indicial practices in the Typographical Old Regime. For this purpose, the first chapter deals with a set of documents produced by the Society of Jesus between 1540 and 1565, indicating the centrality of the excerpere in the educational practices of the Order. The second chapter deals with two Jesuit artes excerpendi, De ratione libros cum profectu legendi libellus (1613), by Francesco Sacchini, and Aurifodina artium et scientiarum omnium (1638), by Jeremias Drexel, showing the ancillary place of the excerpere for the reading practices of Rhetoric disciples, which were centered on learning rhetorical-poetic models, acquiring eruditio, and instruction in prudent living. In the third chapter, an analogy between books and rhetorically instructed discourse is established, analyzing a set of printed indexes, especially in the Portuguese sphere, literate censures to them, and discursive and editorial platitudes used to ensure their credibility, such as the "reader's convenience". Thus, based on the discussion of these aspects, Vieira's indexes are proposed as mediators between the reading of the Sermões, the excerpta extracted from them, and the sermonary inuentio.
