Abstract in English
The present thesis is the result of a bibliographic and documental research in which the relation between the teaching career and the production of Works on literary history was investigated. In this sense, we have developed a thesis that history works on Brazilian Literature from History of Brazilian Literature by Silvio Romero (1851-1914) and José Veríssimo, published in 1888 and 1916, respectively, are closely related to the fact that their authors were teachers, and on account of this, the teaching activity weighed not only in the elaboration of of their works but also in didatic appropriation they display in delineating aspects of the Brazilian school canon. However, we view these aspects in a broader contexto, that is, one which has taken into account the fact in the literary system sketch, at the time was poorly delineated, Romero and Veríssimo managed to develop manages resources for social projection: teaching, publication of didatic works and a distinct character, collaboration in Press and participation in cultural institutions such as Historical Institute and academies, which also ensured financial return. This helps us understand that they alreadyfollowed in the steps covered by Canon Fernandes Pinheiro (1825-1876), our first teacher of Literature (the discipline attained this nomenclature under his rule in the Pedro II School). In addition to the works of the critics mentioned, the documentation consulted Sílvio Romeros personal collection, located in the State Public Library Epifânio Dória, in Aracaju (Sergipe) and Historical and Geographical Institute of Sergipe (IGHSE) played relevant role. In the State Archive of the State of Pará (APEP) and Arthur Vianna Library in Belém (Pará); archives of Brazilian Academy of Letters, of the Brazilian Historical Institute (IHGB); at Rui Barbosa's House Foundation (CRB); at the Hogher Institute of Education in Rio de Janeiro; Documentation nucleus of Pedro II School and Oliveira Lima Library, at the Catholic University of Washington (USA).
