This work aims to study the female characters in the novel Os Corumbas, by Amando Fontes, published in 1933. The author, through the trajectory of a family of migrants, apprehends the drama of social exclusion with a privileged focus on the female working class and on prostitution, highlighting the utilitarianism and objectification of bodies. The work, which fomented the discussion on the proletarian novel in Brazil and Portugal, innovated for the protagonism of working women whose trajectories, marked by the impossibility of emancipation, culminate in prostitution. In contrast to the condition of women, the workers' struggle points to the revolution as the only effective possibility of social change. The analises of the work consists on the relationship between the novel of 1930 and proletarian literature whith aspects of Realism and Naturalism, considering that the themes represented in the novel (especially industrialization and free labor) are related to the modernization of brazilian society in the first decades of the twentieth century. With naturalistic characteristics expressed in the images of textile industries, in the scenes of collectivity and in the characterization of female characters, the novel problematizes the modernization and the work mostly performed by women. From the historical reading and the context of criticism, it aims to to analyze the work that captures the vortex of Brazil in the period, while at the same time it reflects about the social, economic, political and cultural limits imposed on the poorer classes
