Keywords in Portuguese
Diabo
José de Anchieta
Teatrocolonial
Teatromedieval
Teatroreligioso
Abstract in Portuguese
Para tanto, será preciso compreender as realidades ibérica e colonial do século XVI, a formação do teatro quinhentista e a importância do Diabo no pensamento cristão do período.

Abstract in English
The present work intends to analyze the representation of the Devil in the drama written by the jesuit priest José de Anchieta. In the plays Na festa de São Lourenço (1587), Na vila de Vitória (1586) e Na aldeia de Guaraparim (c. 1592), chosen for this research, incorporate a variety of different diabolical types, which correspond to the medieval European imagery - determined by catholic religiosity - as well as the clash between Iberian and Amerindian cultures which took place in the American colonies. Although catechism, promoted by the jesuit missionaries, has been a part of the acculturation process enforced over the natives, we will try to comprehend in what ways the Tupi peoples, to whom Anchieta's plays were performed, have influenced or contributed to form the Devil on scene. Our starting points will be, therefore, comprehending the colonial and Iberian realities in the 16th century, the formation of 16th century drama and the importance of the Devil in the Christian thought of the period. Thus, we intend to discuss each devil's characteristics who is present in the aforementioned plays.
