Abstract in English
This dissertation aims to study violence and mysticism in Grande Sertão: veredas, a novel by João Guimarães Rosa, and in Deus e o Diabo na Terra do Sol, a cinematographic narrative by Glauber Rocha, as well as to reflect on the dispositions of corporeality in both works. From the establishment of approaches between the narratives, we investigate the ways of characterization of violence exposed in the novel and in the film in order to highlight how this element is present in contexts of sociability in which forms of organization inherited from the colonialist system prevail. In addition, a reflection on the impact of violence on the subjective constitution of the protagonists is elaborated, considering the ambiguous disposition of the consciousness of both characters. It is also discussed how the themes involving submission to death would be linked to the aesthetics based on the discontinuity of the narration, that is, the use of a fragmentary syntax in the literary work and a cinematographic montage based on the element of shock. Finally, it is analyzed how the occurrence of ritualistic processes, associated with atonement and liminality, not only influences the constitution of the protagonists of the Grande Sertão: veredas and Deus e o Diabo na Terra do Sol, but also impacts the structures of the works, especially the narrative temporalities. It is thus indicated how the processing of rituals is tied to the use of aesthetic procedures related to the concept of the ellipse and the construction of a prophetic frame for the journey of the main characters. For the development of the interpretations cited, premises of Comparative Literature are used as well as theoretical references by Hannah Arendt, Michel Foucault, Walter Benjamin, and Mircea Eliade.
