Teatro romântico no Brasil

"Conspiration of posterity": idea, becoming and dramatic exhaustion in the historical plays of Brazilian Romanticism

Abstract in English
The objective of my doctoral project is to analyse a corpus of historical plays written in the context of Brazilian Romanticism, seeking to outline the idea of their dramaturgy, understood as the possibility of synthesizing that which appears to be diffuse and disparate through its concepts and form. Its process of becoming and exhaustion will be analysed in terms of its thematic, ideological, dramatic and stylistic aspects, from the birth of Romanticism up until the rupture of realist theater. In this research, we employ the term "historical play" as a general category which, in the context of Brazilian Romanticism, includes historical dramas and historical tragedies, as well as occasional dramatic texts which engage with other influences, such as melodrama and comedy, so long as they are linked in some way to the historical nature of their narratives and are primarily concerned with materialization on stage.
