O conto "Malagueta, Perus e Bacanaço" (1963), de João Antônio, e o filme A Margem (1967), de Ozualdo Candeias, possuem em comum a presença de protagonistas em condição de marginalidade social, os quais articulam estratégias de sobrevivência em meio a uma cidade em plena transformação. Partindo de considerações de Antonio Candido, Ismail Xavier e Paul Ricoeur, elaborou-se uma interpretação da relação entre essas manifestações artísticas e o processo histórico do qual fazem parte, buscando refletir sobre a maneira pela qual as narrativas, sejam elas literárias ou cinematográficas, são capazes de expressar a experiência histórica de um período. Através da análise detida nas obras e a comparação entre elas de elementos similares e dissonantes, buscou-se construir um panorama artístico de problemas referentes à modernização da cidade de São Paulo, particularmente a partir dos anos 50, pela maneira com que ela é percebida por sujeitos marginalizados socialmente.

The short story "Malagueta, Perus and Bacanaço", by João Antônio, and the movie "The Margin", by Ozualdo Candeias, have in common the presence of social marginalized individual as protagonists, which articulate survival strategies amid a city in transformation. Starting from considerations of Antonio Candido, Ismail Xavier and Paul Ricoeur, it is elaborated an interpretation of the relationship between these artistic manifestations and the social process of which they are part of, in search of thinking about the way those narratives, being literary or cinematography, are capable of giving expression to the historical experience of a period. Through detained analysis of the works and the comparison between them of similar and dissonant elements, is was intended to construct an artistic panorama of problems referring to the modernization of the city of São Paulo, starting from the fifties, the way it was elaborated form the perspectives of social marginalized individuals in the works here studied.
