Abstract in English
De Vulgari Eloquentia, an unfinished treatise by Dante Alighieri (1265-1321), written right after the beginning of his exile, is a work which reached us through a scarce manuscript tradition. Dante did not publish his treatise, which probably remained among his manuscripts until his death. After that, the text faces a long period of oblivion, in the 14th and the 15th Centuries. During that period the copies of the treatise receive different titles from those Dante had chosen, according to a strategy which attempts to protect his work from attacks which the name and the author's political positions had attracted along the years. The reappearing of the treatise takes place only in the 16th Century, by means of an Italian translation of its Latin text. And it's immediately involved in the fierce debates of the "Question of Language" in Italy; and in this condition will remain until the 1800's. De Vulgari Eloquentia's critical fortune is characterized by a complex exegesis. In Brazil, initially it takes place by means of translators and commentators of the Commedia, but only in the final decades of the 19th Century. In the city of São Paulo, the spread of the work was initially very scarce, as proved by the few references to it. Nevertheless, the authors which broadcast the work by means of their studies published in São Paulo have stablished peculiar relationships with Dante's treatise, shown by the fact that the work's critical fortune grows expressively in the two first decades of the 21st Century.
