Abstract in Portuguese
New Guide to Film Studies (2001).

Abstract in English
Since the 2000s, Irish cinema has highlighted the representation of social problems brought about the rapid transition from modernity to postmodernity, which destabilized personal, cultural, and national identities. The interest in portraying the ethnic and cultural diversity that shapes the new Irish identity, as well as experiences of isolation and alienation, has increased over the past two decades. This doctoral thesis aims to examine realistic feature films dealing with social exclusion and marginality in the post-Celtic Tiger period. The study traces which individuals are excluded and marginalized in Ireland's advanced capitalism and scrutinizes why they have been represented in the cinema. Furthermore, this research intends to answer: how do these social rejects relate to the place where they live and to their community? How can the themes of social exclusion and marginality, which are still relevant in Ireland, portray universal paradigms? Thus, the selected films are analyzed under the light of the codes and conventions proposed by John Nicholl in New Guide to Film Studies (2001). This approach reflects on how to read a film through an in-depth analysis of the sound and visual tracks, social setting and cultural context that create meaning in audiovisual narrative
