Abstract in Portuguese
Analisando os romances The Catcher in the Rye e On The Road, dos escritores estadunidenses J. D. Salinger e Jack Kerouac, objetiva-se perceber o que constitui a forma desses romances, ambos publicados no momento histórico pós-Segunda Guerra Mundial.

Abstract in English
Analyzing the novels The Catcher in the Rye and On The Road, by U.S. writers J. D. Salinger and Jack Kerouac, it is aimed to perceive what constitutes the form of these novels, both published in post-Second World War historic moment. It is believed that the dropout, a specific and rebellious abandonment of responsibilities, could be the formal constituent of both novels. To prove this thesis, it is intended to start from close reading of excerpts and analyze them from a materialist perspective. It is perceived that the swinging from - as a Jazz boogie - of these novels is given by the recurring substitution of enclaves idealized by narrator Holden Caulfield and Sal Paradise, place where they hope to belong. Their desires are then replaced by new delusions, as their dropout journeys develop themselves. The Post War cultural industry offers few opportunities that interest the narrators, who seek in periferic cultural forms the belonging sense and stimulus which these youngsters can't fing on hegemonic culture - this dialectic will also be analyzed in this study. These are journeys in which different spheres of culture collide during the formation of their individualities, determining the ideological position of there young men facing the contradictions of their time. The formal result of these tensions between abandonment and permanence leads to the incapacity of action and transformation of reality, as they perceive that substantial change isn't a plausible pathway of their bourgeois reality. The ideal scenarios, where they would feel like active members of their communities, aren't even conceivable on their imaginations, a kind of alienation typical of their historical period.
