O presente trabalho propõe analisar a construção das personagens no romance The Waves  (1931), de Virginia Woolf, a partir de três diferentes perspectivas, as quais não se anulam, mas complementam umas às outras. Após examinarmos as personagens em relação com o conjunto de imagens que se vinculam a elas, exploramos os significados dessas imagens e a maneira como se articulam nesta caracterização. Sugerimos que todas as personagens são partes de uma só pessoa em diálogo com a problematização do conceito de identidade no Modernismo. Investigamos, por fim, a importância dos moments of being, espécie de filosofia-estética da autora, e de outros elementos que perpassam a caracterização das personagens e evidenciam a profunda mescla entre elas e o enredo de The Waves. Ademais, avaliamos o contexto histórico, que se reflete na obra e se relaciona com as questões de identidade tratadas. Como conclusão, destacamos a importância de Virginia Woolf para pensar o caminho que a autora abre para a representação do silêncio, do indizível e da poesia do Ser no gênero romance.

This dissertation proposes to analyze the construction of character in The Waves  (1931), by Virginia Woolf, from three distinct, although complementary, perspectives. After examining the characters in relation to the set of images that are linked to each one of them, we explore their meanings and the way these images are articulated in the characterization. Then, we suggest that the characters are part of one whole being, in conversation with the problematization of the concept of identity in Modernism. Lastly, we discuss the importance of Woolf's aesthetic philosophy "moments of being", and other narrative elements are explored as evidence of the deep interconnection between the characters and the plot. In addition, we stress the historical context's portrayal throughout the novel and in relation to the matter of identity we investigated. In the conclusion, we point out Virginia Woolf as a key figure in the opening of a pathway for the literary representation of silence, the unnamable and the poetry of being.
