Abstract in English
The basis of this dissertation is the translation into Portuguese of the manuscript of Sir Thomas Cavendish, ali English corsair, who, after trying to reacli China in 1591, describes all events that took place on his voyage along the coast of Brazil and Patagonia. This work begins by making a historic contextualization of Cavendish, Colonial Brazil and Samuel Purchas' travels and exploration literary production. Purchas was a great editor of narratives of travel and produced a vast compilation of travellers' accounts in the XVI century. After this step, an analysis of linguistic and translation aspects is made, and the early Modern English Cavendish used and his very personal features are highlighted. A glossary of nautical and other terms and the options for the translator, in terms of the possible Portuguese registers, are then presented. This section looks at the translation models proposed by certain scholars and an analysis of similar manuscripts and translations. A complete academic translation follows, with footnotes and comments regarding the translation process
