O presente trabalho tem como objetivo a tradução de um conjunto de cartas de Jane Austen para a língua portuguesa. A importância dessa tarefa não se encerra em pôr esse epistolário à disposição do leitor brasileiro pela primeira vez, mas também, como buscamos demonstrar por meio do estudo que precede a tradução, em dar relevo à intensa atividade de escrita de correspondência, mais particularmente, de cartas familiares, exercida pela autora. Dados revelam que Austen escreveu cerca de 3000 cartas, das quais sobrevivem apenas 161. O texto introdutório aborda alguns aspectos que julgamos essenciais para um melhor tratamento das cartas traduzidas: apresentar as dificuldades envolvidas na tradução do texto epistolar e, mais particularmente, das cartas de Austen; fazer um histórico das publicações das cartas da autora desde seu falecimento, em 1817, até a atualidade; discutir o papel central que a escrita de cartas ocupou na vida dos ingleses no século XVIII, com ênfase nas camadas médias da sociedade, à qual Austen pertencia; oferecer uma análise de aspectos da composição epistolar caros à autora e que fizeram da carta um dos espaços de ampla prática de escrita, que culminará elaborada composição de suas obras.

This dissertation aims at the translation of a set of Jane Austen's letters into Brazilian Portuguese. The relevance of this task is not limited to making these letters available to a Portuguese-speaking readership for the first time. As we seek to demonstrate in our study, Austen wrote letters continuously, mainly familiar letters. Our sources reveal that 3000 of them were written, although only 161 survive. In our introduction, we deal with several topics that we consider essential for a better rendering of the letters into Portuguese: the discussion of the initial difficulties involved in translating Austen's letters; the presentation of the history of their publication from the nineteenth century onwards; the examination of the central role of letter writing in eighteenth-century British culture; the discussion of the education and letter-writing habits of the middling sort, to which Austen belonged; the analysis of certain aspects of letter writing that were dear to Austen and would eventually result in the elaborate composition of her novels.
