Utopia

Abstract in English
Originally published in 1974, The Dispossessed is a science-fiction novel that investigates the possibility of utopia in its historical moment. Thus, its author, Ursula K. Le Guin, creates in its narrative two planets that represent distinct forms of social, political, economic and cultural organization. This doctoral dissertation explores how utopia appears within the narrative frame, and how it mirrors the post-1968 world, when neoliberalism becomes even stronger, coopting the hopes of a better world. For such investigation, we begin with a discussion about what science fiction is, and the role and importance of Le Guin as a writer of this genre. From then on, we can work with the hypothesis of how ambiguous is the utopia in this novel, and how the book figures out the sedimentation of neoliberalism as the only alternative, as professed by Margaret Thatcher. And, lastly, we investigate how dystopia is not the opposite to utopia, and how the dubiety of them both are present somehow in many contemporary literary works, keeping a dialogue with what Le Guin created half a century ago. For such an investigation, some thinkers and critics are recurring figures, such as Fredric Jameson, Darko Suvin and Tom Moylan; and theorists of utopia, e.g. Raymond Williams and Ruth Levitas; while the discussions on neoliberalism begin with writtings by Pierre Dardot and Christian Laval, David Harvey, and Wendy Brown.
