Abstract in English
The object of study of this dissertation is the pedagogical discourse produced in an important English teaching private institution in the post-observation lesson evaluation sessions between subject-observers and subject-teachers. Our objective is to reflect upon the use of the technologies of the self and the technologies of domination (cf. Foucault, 1975/1999a, 1976/1999b, 1979/2000, 1982/1988) as effective tools for quality control of the courses offered by the institution. The central hypothesis of our research is that although the post-observation lesson evaluation sessions have an apparent objective of encouragement to reflection and autonomy, they reinforce the subjectifying of the subject-teacher (subjected to the neoliberal ideology) through the technologies of the self and of the domination. The effectiveness of these technologies is guaranteed by the hierarchical observation, normalizing judgment, the examination, which combines the techniques of the two instruments and finally the confession, which is a specific instrument of the technologies of the self. We observed that besides the examination there are other instruments that control the practice and saying of the teacher such as the course book, the time, the student's progress, the client-student, the lesson-plan and the form which has to be filled in the post observation lesson session. In our analysis we concluded that the subject-teacher internalizes the self-surveillance because the observation performed by the aforementioned instruments is not always visible or clearly located. When relating all the steps of their lesson to the observer not only does the teacher show the internalization of the surveillance but also he/she confesses the mistakes he/she has made during the lesson
