O presente estudo propõe a análise do romance Tobacco Road (1932), de Erskine Caldwell, inserido no contexto da Grande Depressão, considerando a grande crise do capitalismo no início do século XX e seus desdobramentos político-sociais, assim como as condições materiais que definem os sujeitos retratados no romance e o papel que o discurso religioso exerce no imaginário social Estadunidense. Neste contexto, proponho um estudo a respeito de como Caldwell mimetiza tais questões em sua escrita. O presente trabalho tem como ponto de partida a fortuna crítica mais notória e consolidada do autor, reunida em ensaios, críticas e resenhas, desde o início da década de 1930 até os anos 2000. Tenho como objetivo fazer um levantamento de seu estilo, das contradições críticas e, sobretudo, do papel do discurso religioso inserido no contexto da crise, a partir da perspectiva do materialismo histórico.

The present study proposes the analysis of the novel Tobacco Road (1932), by Erskine Caldwell, inserted in the context of Great Depression, considering the great crisis of capitalism in the early twentieth century and its political-social developments, as well as the material conditions that define the subjects portrayed in the novel and the role that the religious discourse plays in the American social imaginary. In this context, I propose a study of how Caldwell mimics such questions in his writing. The present work has as its starting point the most notorious and consolidated critical fortune of the author, gathered in essays, critiques and reviews, from the beginning of the 1930s to the 2000s. I aim to make a survey of his style, the contradictions criticism and, above all, the role of religious discourse inserted in the context of the crisis, from the perspective of historical materialism.
