Abstract in English
This research offers an analysis of Nymphomaniac (2013), directed by Danish filmmaker Lars von Trier. It is an exercise in film analysis considering the theories of materialist cultural criticism and an example of its application in the understanding of works of art as inseparable representations of the material, social and historical contexts to which they were imagined and produced. It begins with an overview of the opening sequence to discuss main formal concepts, such as narrative focus and montage. It shows how the implied author coordinates the construction of meaning and how Bertold Brecht´s distancing and estrangement techniques are applied. Also, it contextualizes the film production, consumption, and insertion in the post-modern scenario. It recognizes the point of view tripartite division based on a detailed analysis of sequences. Also, it assesses the trajectory of the main characters, Joe and Seligman, as representatives of the European petty bourgeoisie. It reflects on the social contradictions of contents - such as work, family, maternity, and sexuality - from conflicts within the hierarchical class structure of the capitalist system. Finally, it seeks to integrate the film and its contents in a literary and cinematographic tradition of August Strindberg, Sergei Eisenstein, Ingmar Bergman, Andrei Tarkovsky, Carl Theodor Dreyer, Marcel Proust, Thomas Mann, and Luiz Buñuel.
