Documento Americano foi um dos primeiros grandes sucessos da carreira da coreógrafa norte-americana Martha Graham. Produzida em 1938, a dança era estruturada em episódios e utilizava recursos emprestados dos shows de menestréis e do teatro épico para apresentar um panorama dos principais eventos da história dos Estados Unidos. A partir da análise de um conjunto de documentos de arquivo a respeito dessa e de outras danças relacionadas, buscamos revelar as condições de possibilidade para o surgimento das principais técnicas, formas e procedimentos de composição da dança moderna norte-americana e seu envolvimento com o movimento da Frente Popular. Nossa pesquisa sugere uma relação de aliança entre a dança moderna e a classe trabalhadora de Nova Iorque durante a segunda metade da década de 1930. Acreditamos que o protagonismo que essa arte do movimento conquistou na cultura de esquerda durante aquele período esteja diretamente ligado ao desejo de representar na cena os grupos e questões sociais da contemporaneidade e às experiências didáticas de organização e ensaio do movimento político coletivo através da dança.

American Document was one of the first major achievements in the career of the American choreographer Martha Graham. Produced in 1938, the dance was structured in episodes and employed procedures borrowed from minstrel shows and epic theater to present an overview of the main events in the history of the United States. From the analysis of a set of archival documents regarding this and other related dances, we seek to reveal the conditions of possibility for the emergence of the main techniques, forms and procedures of composition of American modern dance and its involvement with the Popular Front movement. Our research suggests an alliance between modern dance and the New York working class during the second half of the 1930s. We believe that the key role that this art of the movement performed in leftist culture during that period is directly linked to the desire to represent contemporary social groups and issues on stage and to the didactic experiences of organizing and rehearsing the collective political movement through dance.
