Esta tese tem como objetivo analisar a crítica de Arthur Miller às eras Reagan e Bush Jr., observando de que maneira forma e conteúdo estão dialeticamente relacionados. O dramaturgo se utilizou de um gênero incomum dentro de sua produção escrita, a comédia, e apesar de ambas as peças serem em grande medida descartadas por público e crítica, elas estão entre as mais relevantes e poderosas na/para a dramaturgia norte-americana. Em The Ride Down Mt. Morgan (1998) Miller escreve uma tragédia farsesca como representação da era Reagan, e na qual aponta as consequências das políticas econômicas (Reaganomics) nos anos do nascimento do neoliberalismo no eixo anglo-americano, com Ronald Reagan nos Estados Unidos, e Margaret Thatcher no Reino Unido. Em Resurrection Blues (2002) Miller escreve uma sátira política para criticar um imperialismo militarista que se desvelaria nos anos posteriores, fazendo uma crítica ácida ao capitalismo espetacular e à sua base neoliberal, endossados pelas políticas de George W. Bush (Bush Jr.). Tendo a América Latina, como espaço em que a ação acontece, a peça recorre ao nascimento do neoliberalismo através das Ditaduras militares da direita que tiveram início nos anos 1960. Ambas as peças mapeiam momentos cruciais da história do neoliberalismo, sendo simultaneamente diagnóstico e prognóstico das eras às quais se relacionam, além de elucidar o momento atual de ascensão do conservadorismo político e social, do autoritarismo, e da racionalidade neoliberal antidemocrática que tem marcado fortemente o século XXI.

The aim of this thesis is to analyze Arthur Miller's critique of the Reagan and Bush Jr. eras, observing how form and content are dialectically related. The playwright has used an unusual genre within his written production, comedy, and although both plays are largely dismissed by audiences and critics alike, they are among the most relevant and powerful ones in/for the American drama. In The Ride Down Mt. Morgan (1998) Miller writes a farcical tragedy as a representation of the Reagan era, in which he points to the consequences of the economic policies (Reaganomics) in the years of the birth of neoliberalism on the Anglo-American axis, with Ronald Reagan in the United States, and Margaret Thatcher in the United Kingdom. In Resurrection Blues (2002) Miller writes a political satire so as to criticize a militaristic imperialism that would unfold in the ensuing years, making a caustic critique of the spectacular capitalism and its neoliberal base endorsed by the policies of George W. Bush (Bush Jr.). Having Latin America as the space in which the action unfolds, the play resorts to the birth of neoliberalism through the right-wing military dictatorships that began in the 1960s. Both plays map crucial moments in the history of neoliberalism, being simultaneously diagnosis and prognosis of the eras to which they relate, and they elucidate the current moment of the rise of political and social conservatism, authoritarianism, and the undemocratic neoliberal rationality that has marked the 21st century.
