Realism
Abstract in English
This paper aims to analyze Ken Loachs docudrama Cathy Come Home (1966). Since the movie presents Londons housing question as its main theme, it often leads the public to understand it as a mere denouncement of the terrible housing conditions in the British capital in the 1960s. In order to avoid such limited interpretation of Loachs docudrama, this project intends to carry out an analysis that is able to understand the totality of the material elaborated by the director and apprehend elements of the film that usually go unnoticed. Throughout this paper which permeates the debate on realism we seek to understand the configuration of Loach's docudrama as part of the effort to make visible some hidden dimensions of reality and its contradictions, so that the film could be perceived not as a mere representation of the most immediate social problems experienced by workers, but also as an intervention in the public debate through a diagnosis of the historical period and the political impasses and struggles of the working class. From this perspective, the work goes beyond the limits of a mere denoucement and shows itself as a deep reflection on precarious work, on the reproduction of bourgeois ideology among the workers themselves and, finally, on the level of class consciousness in the most impoverished sectors of the working class. Through this broad diagnosis offered by Ken Loach, we also seek to detect the possible consequences of each of these social processes. To this end, this paper relies on Raymond Williams' reflection on realism as a method which is also capable of envisioning the seeds of the future in the present, thus capturing the possibilities of transforming reality
