Keywords in Portuguese
Fascismo
Jack London
Romance estadunidense
Socialismo

Abstract in English
The present dissertation aims at a detailed analysis of the novel The Iron Heel, by Jack London, seeking to understand its relationship with contemporary historical processes and its predictive capacity in relation to future developments. For this, the dissertation is initially focused on the formal aspects of the novel, dealing with its mechanism of double narration and discussing how it affects the treated contents. Still in this first chapter, the construction of the protagonist as a "prophet" and the form of fictional development, which maintains an intense dialogue with contemporary historical facts, are discussed. In the second chapter of the dissertation, the main economic, social, political and ideological trends of the beginning of the 20th century are debated, always from the reading of the novel. Finally, the third chapter seeks to establish comparisons between the fictional authoritarian regime that rises in the development of the novel, and the fascist regimes that ascended in the 20th century, using as main basis the theory of Leon Trotsky.
