A presente dissertação tem como objetivo apontar a relação entre história, performatividade e forma narrativa no romance contemporâneo Days Without End (2016) do escritor irlandês Sebastian Barry. Baseado nos estudos sócio-históricos da construção de gênero e sexualidade na Irlanda (VALENTE, 1994; KIBERD, 1998; CULLINGFORD, 2008; EUFRAUSINO, 2017) e nas teorias pós-estruturalistas que unem subjetividade e linguagem (LACAN, 1956; WEEDON, 1987; KULAWIK, 2007), a análise propõe uma relação intrínseca entre a representação da subjetivação desde uma perspectiva de gênero do narrador-personagem e a linguagem utilizada na narrativa. Partindo disso, analisaremos o personagem como representação de um sujeito histórico que expõe o caráter performativo do binarismo de gênero (BUTLER, 1999). Utilizaremos o contexto histórico da construção da masculinidade estadunidense e do nacionalismo irlandês, apontando como discursos generificados estão presentes na ideia de nação de grupos nacionalistas. Através desse ponto de vista historiográfico, poderemos entender as contingências da performance de gênero de McNulty que cria na narrativa espaços generificados. Por essa mesma perspectiva, investigaremos como a linguagem simula as questões históricas e de performatividade, ao apresentar o conflito entre as línguas inglesa e irlandesa. Na união entre sujeito e linguagem, apontaremos para os elementos poéticos do texto que revelam uma performatividade textual ao exibir as questões históricas da identidade irlandesa. A relação entre McNulty e a linguagem sugere uma contestação linguística e de identidade: ele é um sujeito que, através da sua narrativa, aponta para os processos colonizatórios e migratórios pelos quais passou.

This dissertation aims to point out the relationship between history, performativity and narrative form in the novel Days Without End (2016) by the contemporary Irish writer Sebastian Barry. Based on socio-historical studies on gender and sexuality in Ireland (VALENTE, 1994; KIBERD, 1998; CULLINGFORD, 2008; EUFRAUSINO, 2017) and poststructuralist theories that connect subjectivity and language (LACAN, 1956; WEEDON, 1987; KULAWIK, 2007), the analysis proposes an intrinsic relationship between the representation of Thomas McNulty's subjectivation from a gender perspective and the language he uses in the narrative. We will examine the character as a representation of a historical subject that exposes the performative aspect of gender (BUTLER, 1999). We will investigate the historical context of the construction of US masculinity and Irish nationalism, pointing out how gendered discourses are present in the idea of a nation. From this historiographical point of view, we can understand the contingencies of McNulty's performance that creates gendered spaces. Through this same perspective, we will investigate how language simulates historical and performativity issues by presenting the conflict between the English and Irish languages . In the connection between subject and language, we will point to the poetic elements that reveal textual performativity.
