Abstract in English
In this dissertation, we essay to compare Machado de Assis' novel Quincas Borba (1891) and the duke's episode, located between chapters XXX and LVII in the second part of Don Quixote (1615). Despite some resemblances concerning in the construction of the plot of Quincas Borba, and the relevance of Cervantes' work to Brazilian writer, is not possible to assert that Machado de Assis was exclusively inspired by Miguel de Cervantes and his masterpiece. However, through some verifiable procedures in both works - the parody of social context and the literary register and the re-writing -, we except to demonstrate that Brazilian writer might have noticed that some Cervantes' creative processes, assimilating and adapting them to his purposes. In the first chapter, we intend to discuss the proximity existent in the construction in both plots; we also indicate most critics that, somehow, have referred to the Cervantes' and his woks presence in Machado de Assis' novel. Proceded by a brief analysis of the different contexts in which these works were conceived, the second chapter discuss the habits and thoughts originated in societies marked by the influence of the Court. The third chapter analyses the use of the Menippean satire, and the last one will examine the rewriting issue in Cervantes and Machado de Assis. In a way to pointing indications with regard to this research, we refer texts of important critical, like Close (1998, 2006), Vieira (2012), García López (2015), amongst others which have contemplated Quixotes studies and the poetics, concerning Machado de Assis' work, by example: Caldwell (1970), Miguel Pereira (1970), Hansen (2005), Guimarães (2012), Chauvin (2013). They analysed Quincas Borba novel under different and productive perspectives.
