Abstract in English
Throughout history, most studies of the one-act allegorical religious dramas known as auto sacramentales did not consider the rhetorical and poetical theories that, in Calderón de la Barca's time, provided the rules and models for the performing arts. Thus, the value and significance of the sacramental plays have differed according to the concepts, conditioning and assumptions of each reader in each historical moment The goal of the present study is to reconstruct the system of representation to which the autos sacramentales belonged. The sacramental plays were enactments of the holiness of the counter-reformist Christian theology and politics Calderón defined them as "sermons puestos en verso" [sermons in verse] that unchangingly dramatized the same subject matter namely, the Redemption and the Eucharist Inasmuch as they were "sermons", it is possible to associate some constitutive elements of the auto sacramentales to the predicable concepts, i.e., expressions extracted from the Bible relating sacred matters and a rather keen way of presenting the word of God, to which, according to treatises on sacred eloquence, preachers of the 1 7 century resorted to marvel their audience. The auto sacramentales are allegorical representations. For Calderón de la Barca, as well as for Ficino, Pico de la Mirandola and other humanists, Christian truths were present in every tradition of every age. In El Divino Orfeo and Andrómeda y Perseo, two mythological autos sacramentales, the Madrilenian author transposes the interpretative principles of the medieval Church Fathers to texts of fiction, thus allowing Christianized myths to decorously educate the people about an ethics and politics substantiated on the authorities while delighting them with ingenious metaphors
