Abstract in English
This work aims to realize a critical reading of the chronicles gathered in the book Aguafuertes Cariocas, written by Roberto Arlt in 1930. The main objective is to understand which representation of Rio de Janeiro as a modern city in Aguafuertes is being composed by the chronicler, considering that his experience as an inhabitant and chronicler of Buenos Aires -- a city that has been undergoing an important process of modernization since the end of the 19th century -- was at the base of the city's image that conforms to Rio's chronicles. For this purpose, notions relating to the modern city, popular culture and political culture were mobilized, as well as reflections on the chronicle genre, its specificities and its close relationship with the modernization processes that affected some cities in Latin America at the beginning of the 20th century. It was also an object of interest to analyze the appearance of Portuguese in language´s Arlt, either spontaneously or in the form of reproduction and translation, so that a speculation can be done on the possible meanings that the insertion of that language could assume in the chronicler's writing, characterized by criticism on the use of a "plebeian language". Furthermore, it was asked about the possible relationships between Rio's chronicles and the representations that the writer made of Brazil in his work of fiction, with the purpose of analyzing how Brazil appears in fiction's Arlt before and after his trip to Rio de Janeiro.
